One
of the most popular of the Pousadas of Portugal for people crossing
into Spain, this property sits atop a hill overlooking the Miranda do Douro dam where the Douro River
forms the border between Portugal and Spain. The pousada building was part of the dam
project. The village of Miranda do Douro maintains its own dialect and old traditions.
This is an excellent area for bird watchers. Opened in 1962, the pousada has 13 rooms in a

Founded by King Dom Sancho in 1226, Alijó is in the heart of the Douro wine valley.
This is the only one of the Pousadas of Portugal was named
after Englishman James Forrester who played a vital role in the development of port wine,
this pousada was opened in 1983. It is located among the famous "Quintas"
(farms) and terraces where grapes are grown and the delicious wine is produced. Many of
the local farms welcome guests for wine tasting or meals. The pousada has 11 rooms, a
swimming pool and a tennis court.

- Almeida
Just 17 km from the Spanish border, Almeida is a walled city, that is an important part of
Portugal's national heritage. Wellington's troops were besieged here in 1810 during the
Napoleonic wars. The pousada was built in 1987 within the walls of the town. It has 21 air
conditioned rooms.
