Itinerary:
Day 1, Sunday: En route
Overnight flight
from USA to Spain.
Day 2,
Monday: Madrid
Arrival at
Madrid airport. Your tour host will be awaiting to drive you to your hotel. The balance of
the day will be free for resting or exploring.
Day 3,
Tuesday: Madrid
Buffet breakfast. An exciting full day of sightseeing begins with
the nearby ancient former capital city of Toledo. The guided walking tour will thread its
way through the narrow cobblestone streets, visiting the magnificent cathedral, with
soaring arches and beautiful stained glass windows. Marvel at a restored medieval
synagogue building, and see one of the painter El Greco's masterpieces. Enjoy a delicious
Toledan lunch before returning to Madrid for a panoramic tour which will highlight
monuments like the Neptune and Cibeles Fountains, Plaza De España with its Don
Quixote statue, the "cathedral of Post Offices", plus a glimpse into the Plaza
Mayor, where bullfights and Inquisition trials, were held!
Day 4, Wednesday:
Madrid - Avila - Salamanca
Buffet breakfast. Depart northward toward the rugged Guadarrama
mountains. The landscape will make an abrupt change as you enter what is referred to as
the "Land of Stones and Saints" near the medieval city of Avila completely
surrounded by 11th century walls which are perfectly preserved. Pause to admire before
continuing to the ancient university city of Salamanca for dinner and accommodations. You
will have time to wander through the Main Plaza, one of the most beautiful and lively in
Europe.
Day 5,
Thursday: Salamanca - Fatima - Lisbon
Buffet breakfast. Depart toward Portugal, passing the quaint
border town of Ciudad Rodrigo. Drive through ruggedly beautiful scenery. Pause in Fatima,
the famous shrine where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to shepherd children.
Continue to Lisbon for accommodations.
Day 6,
Friday: Lisbon
Buffet breakfast. Your morning tour of Lisbon will take you
through the narrow and twisting streets of the Alfama, the former Moorish quarter. Watch
for the unique trolley cars especially designed for steep hills! Visit the historical
Tower of Belem, Monument to the Discoverers, and admire the lovely Manueline architecture
of the Jeronimos monastery. Lunch is included. The afternoon is free. Perhaps take the
wonderful optional excursion to the quaint village of Sintra, in the hills outside of
Lisbon.
Day 7,
Saturday: Lisbon -Cordoba
Buffet breakfast. Head eastward through forests of the unique
cork trees into Spain and exotic Andalusia, Spain's southern provinces where the Moorish
influence is felt most. Proceed to Cordoba. Dinner and overnight.
Day 8,
Sunday: Cordoba -Seville
Buffet breakfast. The morning guided tour of the great Mosque
with its labyrinth of columns will be an unforgettable experience. Later proceed to
Seville for dinner and overnight.
Day 9, Monday:
Seville
Buffet breakfast. Today's sightseeing tour will include the
interior of the cathedral, the Giralda bell tower, the narrow streets of the Santa Cruz
Quarter, where wrought iron grilles hold potted red geraniums and offer glimpses into
cool, green courtyards with splashing fountains. Lunch will be served in a typical
restaurant. The afternoon is free.
Day 10,
Tuesday: Seville -Gibraltar - Costa del Sol
Buffet breakfast. Head south to Gibraltar, still a British
enclave (take your passport)! You will have free time to see some of the many sights
offered. Continue along the Costa del Sol for dinner and overnight at a resort on the
Mediterranean.
Day 11,
Wednesday: Costa del Sol
Buffet breakfast. Enjoy a free day to catch your breath and enjoy
one of Europe's most popular playgrounds. Perhaps take a stroll along the beach or visit
the charming mountainside village of Mijas, which sports a square bullring.
Day 12, Thursday:
Costa del Sol - Granada
Buffet breakfast. Depart toward Granada, nestled at the feet of
the Sierra Nevada, which is snow capped most of the year. Enjoy an escorted tour of
the fabled Alhambra Visit intricately decorated chambers where dancing girls once whirled.
Wander through the extensive gardens, where tropical flowers and fruit trees mark contrast
with the distant snowcapped hills. Dinner.
Day 13,
Friday: Granada -Aranjuez - Madrid
Buffet breakfast. Depart northwards, through seemingly endless
groves of olive trees, then across the Plains of La Mancha. Perhaps catch a glimpse
of the legendary windmills. Pause in the royal town of Aranjuez where
you can admire the palace before we continue on to Madrid.
Day 14,
Saturday: En route
Buffet breakfast. At the proper time, your transferist will drive
you to the Madrid airport to board your flight to the USA. |
