    HALF DAY LISBON TOUR

    Lisbon is a wonderful old European Capital City, first settled by the Phoenicians over 2,000 years ago. Start in Belem with the Monument of the Discoveries, Jeronimos Monastery and the Coach Museum. Portugal discovered all of the major sea routes in the 14th and 15th century and was the first country to have a ship reach the Pacific Ocean and circumnavigate the globe.  Belem is a testament to the days of glory.

    Later you’ll drive down the Avenida Liberdade, the broad tree lined avenue that is Lisbon’s fashionable main thoroughfare. You’ll pass through the Rossio Square and the Baixa where the streets are named for the crafts that were practiced there, including Rua da Prata (street of silver) and Rua d’Oro (street of gold.)

    You’ll pass through the Praça da Commercio (Black Horse Square) enroute to the Alfama. (Lisbon’s old Arab quarter.)  You’ll see the city of Lisbon laid out below you from St. Jorge’s Castle that occupies the highest of Lisbon’s 7 hills. Later you will have a chance to walk through the narrow alleys of the Alfama.

     

    Return to the hotel. Entrance fees not included.

    FADO EVENING TOUR

    Upon pick up from your hotel you will be taken to one of the local Fado clubs for an evening of entertainment.  This style of music is very typical and unique to Portugal. This is transportation only. Meals entry fees or drinks are not included.

    HALF DAY QUELUZ - SINTRA TOUR

     

    We depart Lisbon for Queluz, home to the national palace that still provides accommodations to heads of state. This palace has wonderful formal gardens and rooms that are patterned after Versailles. After a visit here we’ll continue on to Sintra. 

     

    Sintra has long been noted for the beauty of its countryside. Once called a “Glorious Eden” by Lord Byron, this area was at one time the resort of the Portuguese Kings. We’ll visit the Pena Palace, perched on a peak of the Serra da Sintra, this is the castle & palace of   your imagination.  You’ll have some time to explore the streets of the old town before we return to Lisbon.

    Sintra has long been noted for the beauty of its countryside. Once called a “Glorious Eden” by Lord Byron, this area was at one time the resort of the Portuguese Kings. Visit the Pena Palace.  Perched on a peak of the Serra da Sintra, this is the castle & palace of   your imagination.  See the 12th century church of Santa Maria and the Palace Nacional.  Return to Lisbon.  Entrance fees not included.

    After breakfast head north into the Costa da Prata Region. This area is loaded with castles, monasteries and interesting things to see. Drive to Obidos, an 800-year-old medieval village. We'll visit Obidos and then drive on to the scenic fishing village of Nazare. This is an excellent place to stop for lunch. Later we'll continue on to Alcobaça and Batalha (don't miss the beautiful abbey here!) Continue to Fatima, the site of the Marian Shrine. Return to Lisbon for the overnight.

    Later we’ll drive out to Cabo da Rocha, the rocky seaside and then to Queluz.  Here you can tour the 18th century Royal Palace. Return to Lisbon for the overnight. Entrance fees not included.

    FULL DAY ALENTEJO TOUR

     

    We depart Lisbon over the April 25th Bridge past the imposing statue of Cristo Rey and across the Setubal Peninsula. We'll drive to the Alentejo. This is the region of Portugal that borders Spain and has several fortress towns complete with battlements and castles. It is also the land of cork trees, grazing sheep and olive groves. The area has its own wines (maybe the best in Portugal!), its own cuisine and handcrafts. Visit Evora. This is a 2,000-year-old Roman town that maintains much of its medieval flavor.  Visit the surrounding villages of Monsaraz, and Redondo.   Return to Lisbon for the overnight. Entrance fees not included.

    Wines of the setubal peninsula

     

    We depart Lisbon heading south across the April 25th Bridge where you get some excellent views of the Lisbon skyline and the Statue of Cristo Rey.

     

    We will drive to Palmela, where you can visit the castle of  Palmela, which is now a pousada.  You’ll have time for lunch here before we continue with our program.

     

    We’ll cross the Setubal Peninsula passing through the shipbuilding center of Setubal. Then we are on to Azeitão, the center of wine making in the region.

     

    Here we have an opportunity to visit the Fonseca Winery with its beautiful gardens and excellent wines. The manor here has a stunning collection of azulejos (the blue tiles that were so popular in 19th century Portugal.)  You’ll have a chance to taste some of the excellent wines produced here before we return to Lisbon.

    Wines of the Alentejo

     

    We depart Lisbon heading south across the April 25th Bridge where you get some excellent views of the Lisbon skyline and the Statue of Cristo Rey.

     

    We cross the Setubal Peninsula bypassing through the shipbuilding center of Setubal.

     

    We will drive east into the Alentejo. This is the region of Portugal that borders Spain and has several fortress towns complete with battlements and castles. It is also the land of cork trees, grazing sheep and olive groves. The area has its own wines (maybe the best in Portugal!), its own cuisine and handcrafts. 

     

    We will visit Evora. This is a 2,000-year-old Roman town that maintains much of its medieval flavor. The city has evolved into a vibrant city with numerous galleries, cafes and shops. The Cathedral here has an ossuary, which is interesting if not a little macabre.

     

    From Evora we’ll visit the Herdade Esparão, a wine estate near Monsaraz, where you can visit the vineyards and enjoy some exceptionally good wine.

     

    On our return to Lisbon, we’ll stop in Arraiolos, where very fine hand woven rugs have been made for centuries.

     

    We’ll return to Lisbon in the late afternoon.
